Spring Lawn Revival: How to Bring Your Yard Back to Life
Spring Has Sprung and So Has Your Lawn
After a few chilly months, your lawn is finally ready to wake up from its winter nap. But before you pull that mower out of the shed and start cutting, it’s worth giving your yard a bit of attention to set it up for success. Spring is the most important season for lawn recovery in Queensland and what you do now determines how healthy and green your lawn will look through the long, hot summer ahead.
1. Rake, Clean and Clear the Slate
Winter often leaves behind thatch, a layer of matted, dead grass that smothers new shoots. Give your lawn a thorough rake to remove it and let sunlight reach the soil again.
If you don’t already have one, a Bushranger Blower Vac or STIHL Vacuum Shredder makes this step quick and easy. These tools clear leaves, twigs and debris without tearing up your grass.
2. Aerate and Feed the Soil
Compact soil is one of the biggest causes of patchy lawns. Use a garden fork or manual aerator to poke small holes across the surface, allowing air, water and nutrients to reach the roots.
Once aerated, spread a quality spring fertiliser high in nitrogen. Follow with a soil conditioner or wetting agent to help your lawn absorb water evenly which is especially important in the lead-up to Queensland’s hot, dry spells.
Tip: A handheld or backpack sprayer makes applying liquid treatments fast and precise.
3. Check, Sharpen and Service Your Mower
If your mower’s been sitting in the shed since autumn, now’s the time to bring it back to life. Fresh oil, a clean air filter and sharp blades will make mowing smoother and safer.
At Acacia Mower Centre and Yarrabilba Mower Centre, we offer full servicing on multiple major brands.
Need new blades, spark plugs or air filters? We stock genuine and aftermarket parts for most models. Drop in or give us a call and we can assist you with the correct parts.
4. Mow Right and Water Smarter
As your lawn starts growing again, resist the urge to mow too short. Cutting more than a third of the grass blade at once weakens the plant and leaves it vulnerable to weeds and heat stress.
For best results:
-
Keep your mower height slightly higher through spring.
-
Mow regularly to maintain density and promote new shoots.
-
Water deeply early in the morning, two to three times a week rather than every day.
If your mower’s on its last legs, it might be time to upgrade before summer. Our team can help you choose from a range of models from compact Stihl battery mowers to powerful Gravely zero-turns built for larger properties.
5. Keep Edges and Paths Looking Sharp
Don’t stop at the grass. Tidy edges can transform a yard instantly. Use a line trimmer to neaten up footpaths, driveways and garden borders.
If you have thicker overgrowth, a brushcutter will power through weeds and long grass with ease and is ideal for acreage and rural properties. We carry a full range in-store and can help you match the right cutting head or nylon line for your needs.
6. Stay Consistent for Summer Success
The best-looking lawns aren’t the result of one weekend’s effort, they’re maintained little by little. Keep fertilising every 6–8 weeks, mow at the correct height, and water deeply to build strong roots before the heat sets in.
If you stay consistent through spring, you’ll glide into summer with a resilient, green lawn that can handle heavy use, heat, and those classic afternoon storms.
